GM Workers Go On Strike

The Primary: The United Auto Workers Union announced its members employed by General Motors will be striking over closed factories and pay structures.

  • Who? What? Why?: The strike is the first in 12 years and is the result of GM “reallocating” 5 factories formerly in the U.S. Additionally, the UAW is “demanding fairer wages, affordable health care, profits, job security and a path for permanent positions for temporary employees,” per Axios.

  • The Baseline: According to the NYT, the strike could have wide-spread effects depending on how long it lasts. While GM has a large enough inventory to maintain sales for 3 months, consumers could see a shortage if an agreement isn’t reached before then.
